12 Minute Tune
The Twelve-Minute Tune resets all the values read by the various sensors, and starts the 'learning' portions of the ECU over with a clean slate.
With the bike stone-cold, start the engine, then touch nothing. You don't want to give it any throttle, brake, clutch, or any other input to the ECU. Just start it and let it idle.
Start your timer when the radiator fan first turns on. Give it the full twelve minutes, then shut the bike off with the key (
not the red kill rocker switch
).

Thanks for this Mustang. I did the 12 min tune after doing a bafflectomy on my standard pipe to get some more sound out.
It has made a difference to the idle which was too fast and also surging. Now it sits at around 1000rpm and is much smoother. Also returns to idle quicker. Didnt cure the snatch at town sppeds tho.
Thanks again

So what exactly did the `bafflectomy' entail and does it sound better?

Most likely the pipes from the IACV.

Re: 12 Minute Tune
I just bought my first bike, and it is a Tiger 955i model 2001. I am very satisfied indeed with my choice. It runs very well despite its 40k+ miles. Two minor issues though:
First: when idle it is running a little uneven, like it's out of sync. I don't have the proper terminology. When driving I can feel it as a slight extra push forward once every second or so at RPM up to say 2500.
Second: it takes a 2-4 seconds to start it when cold. New bikes start immediately so I think it should be possible to tune it to start quickly?
The "12 minute tune" sounds like something I can try without any skills yet in fixing bikes. How do I know if my 2001 is suitable for a "12 minute Tune"?
It's about 12-15 degrees (55F?) outside here now so can I expect it to take about 5 or 20 minutes before the fan starts spinning when I start the bike cold?
Thanks

Welcome
and congratulations.
If the water cooling thermostat is functioning properly it will warm up a bit quicker than 20 mins, so long as you are not in the wind.
You are in the right place to get help. Your call is now in a que, and will be answered by one of our experts shortly

Thank you!
One additional point: does it have to stand straight up when doing this, or could it lean on the side stand?

Re: 12 Minute Tune
Uneven idling is normal but that "push" you describe is what's often called surging. There are various theories for the cause (I believe it's down to the ECU trying to adjust the mixture to an exact 14.5:1 ("closed loop" running)) and similarly many cures. I cured mine by remapping it with tuneboy to get rid of the closed loop and it improved it immensely. Other things to look at are balancing the throttle bodies with carbtune or similar and resetting the throttle position sensor.
12 minute tune should work on your bike I think - and yes, on the prop stand is fine.

I will report when I have done this but it will have to wait at least one week due to travelling.

Re: 12 Minute Tune
12 minute tune is for bikes that don't have an O2 sensor in the exhaust (lower end of the downpipe right hand side) . If it has an O2 sensor it needs the "Adaptation".
Don't start faffing with it until you've given it a basic service including checking the valve clearances if they've not been down recently and balancing the throttle bodies. I keep saying, balancing the TBs are the single easiest and most effective thing you can do to your Girly. Girlies are super sensitive to balance and they go out really easy.
