Junk the Airbox

Rebuilding a 2000 885i and thought I'd get rid of the airbox and replace with pod filters but wondering how this would affect the mapping.

Has anybody done this successfully?

Will also be changing the exhaust.

Hmmm, could be complicated, you have a temp sensor, barometric pressure sensor and the IACV (Idle stepper valve) all go into the airbox. The IACV especially must also be filtered or you'll be drawing dirty air straight into the engine

Glad to be of service, there's nothing worth watching on telly anyway.

Spent a couple of hours tinkering on Sunday afternoon and now got the chassis fully stripped down. Couldn't resist taking a grinder to the passenger footrests hangers as there's no way my missus will get on the back of a bike with me ever again, they stick out and are as ugly as Pug's ears!

Looking at the airbox and it seems simple enough to accommodate the sensors in any new arrangement. Instead of 3 separate pod filters, I was thinking of a rectangular car type pancake filter. It would be simple enough the re-fix the sensors. The idle control valve is just a simple stepper motor which moves a plunger 5mm to open or close 3 holes supplying extra air to the throttle bodies. That wouldn't be difficult to re-site.

Can anyone see anything I've missed?

Can't fault your theory the hassle I had just having a stepper motor go belly and introducing a new one into the system was more than enough enough never mind digging it out of its comfy place and relocating it.

Shock looks interesting cuz it ain't stock White Power?

Looking at the lips on the discs they've done a few miles that is for sure.

Optical illusion? Is the front wheel 17"?

New to these bikes so couldn't tell you about the shock. Should have it out of the frame at the weekend as the spring needs powder coating so hopefully can identify it then.

Wheels are 17" at the rear and 19" up front which is standard isn't it?

No need for a trip to Specsavers Chris, you're absolutely correct. All 3 discs are shot, way below the 5mm minimum. Another internet order is imminent!

Shorty carbon fibre front mudguard on the way and will be shaving off all un-necessary lugs from the fork legs and they will be off to the powder coaters along with the wheels and hubs. Matte black all round I think.

No such luck I'm afraid - and I've just seen the price of a set of 3 new discs!

Does anyone know of a cheap source for these?

A mate of mine had a large car spares business and everything was manufactured in China, even a lot of the OEM stuff. He says he never paid more than £4 wholesale for discs, even vented! VW quoted me over £800 for discs and pads all round on my A6 and he did them for under £120.

The EBC discs are good and an awful lot cheaper than oem, still going to cost a bit though. There are some cheaper pattern parts out there but I found they wear fast and wear your pads quickly too.
