Hi all,

Next month I will be collecting an old t400 (1993).

As a friend owns a Triumph work shop, I have plans for a few mods  :)

On the wishlist:

Soon:

17" wheel conversion (I want to fit 120/70 and 160/60)

Eventually:

Daytona 900 cams+carbs&jets (should give about 100 ponies)

Daytona 900 Super III Pistons (if available for a decent price; should jack it up to 120 ponies  :D )

A question about the wheels though: I'm still not sure whether to go for cast wheels (say Daytona 900) and fit TL tires, or respoke the original hubs.

Does anyone have any experience here? I'm afraid I will have to modify the lower forks AND triple clamps if I want to fit de Daytona wheels.

On the other hand, will a respoked 3.5" rim fit between the original front forks without further mods? Or should I just abandon the idea of spoked rims, as this will also mean tubed tires?

Phew; that's one h**l of a first post here. Any takers? Cheers!

Grtz!

I've been thinking of how to convert to T/Less tyres on my 955i for some time now. Ive been told that the rear wheel from an early 1200 Trophy fits straight in because the swingarm is exactly the same. I'm not sure what size tyres can be fitted though.

As for the front......I don't know.

Mine has been SuperMoto'd for 2 years now(It's a 955)haveing just put a pair of Dymags on my other bike, buying a second set was out of the question,so i purchased a second pair of Tiger wheels and had 17" rims laced on them,so i could at least swop back to the originals,if i sold it and the buyer wanted it standard.

Cleaning the front wheel is e'r !!!,a pain as there isn't much room for things like fingers and hands!!!!,so on that basis alone i'g go cast wheels,my biggest regret is just at the end of last year,a guy in the south of England was selling various bits of his S/M Tiger and i didn't buy his Dymags Grrrrrrrrrr, but had plenty of other goodies!!!.

Was looking in the loft the other day and found my original wheels, real spindly things can,t imagine how the hell i ever rode the bike on those!!!!,.

I've been told that virtually all wheels from the old carb hinckleys will fit.

Even up to the Daytona super III 5" rear wheel (180/55-17) (Modular design, eh?   ). However, as I would like to retain the 'flickiness', I'd probably go for the normal Daytona wheel and fit a 160/60-17.

Googleing, I found a German firm who fitted a Trident wheel (18"). I would not go there, as the tire choice for 18" is limited. Also, if you're lowering front as well, I seriously doubt the cornering stability of the thing.

(1" up at the rear, and 2" down in front seems quite a lot)

@Chris: did you have to change anything else apart from the front wheel? (I'm thinking speedo, front fender, suspension etc.)

Anyhow, cheers for the info, though!

Well there by hangs a tale,i'd had the bike 12 months, and to be honest,i don't go for this off road rubbish,it's a sales pitch, and i say that as someone who virtually gave up rideing a road for nearly 8 years while i raced an Enduro bike, and if anyone goes through the archives of the Weston Beach race in the UK,I rode the very first one as number 1,and struggle round for about 90th place which wasn't to bad out of 550,the golden rule with off roading always ride something that you are capable of carrying or dragging at some point, found the vast majority can't ride a six hundered single never mind one of our monsters, and thats what set me off on the S/M  route.

I have a Dutch friend who sends me mags etc and one of the them had an article about a German company that had done a 955,so the first stop was www.tigerhome.de were there were plenty of pictures.

I could get the wheels laced here in the UK no problem, but then needed info on lowering the front mudguard,I contacted www.sbf-motoraeder.de and they sent me one in the post.

The next problem was the speedo, both the Germans and Jack Lilley wanted to sell me a replacement speedo, but i wanted to keep the mileage as accurate as possible so i contacted a company in Australia www.blackrobotics.com and they sent me a magic box of tricks so you can alter your speedo 25% either way,in seconds although there is now a UK importer who want to charge 30% extra!!!,and thats about it!!!.

I run a 180 Bridgestone on the back and an 010 on the front, and it turns before you even think about it,so much so thats it's not for those with a nervous disposition!!!,what i really like is it steers just as quick even when it's fully loaded for touring Europe.

Cheers Chris!

Is your Dutch friend a member of the Dutch Triumph club?

I'll be sure to contact them as well.

I don't know how your German is, but check out www.s-mot.de Apparantly, they do wheel conversions and the lot!

BTW, if you (or anyone else) need help translating Dutch-English, German-English, leave me a PM.

Also, I asked a dutch SM specialist, and they respoke an re-rim the original hub, setting you back 250-270 euros (excl. shipping)

Well my German is just is just as bad as my Dutch, which is a disgrace really as i've known my Dutch mate 30 years, but i have seen a lot of Holland,he moved two years ago from Breda to Middleburg, the only problem he's into Laverdas!!!!.

His Famous quote. There are tri lingual,bi lingual, and Englishmen!!!

and as he's like most Dutch who speak German,French and English, there's not much i can say!!!.

I stuck dymags on mine and had the front end reworked for my riding style which is fairly aggresive and leans to the sporty side of things, also have an ohlins going on which I'm really happy about as I will always take suspension over horsepower anytime.

I also agree with Chris on the offroad thing as I bought mine purely for being a great all rounder and doing all sorts of things on the road and I had no intentions of going off road on the thing

My bodywork comes back this week after getting painted and I also painted the lower fork legs and everything is in a glorious shade of matt black with a couple of skull murals on it for kicks
