Title: deer whistle
Post by: Gravity Tester on August 10, 2015, 06:19:16 PM
Any one had any luck with Deer Whistles ? Had Bambi Take me out two weeks ago. Only doing 10 -15 Mph since Mom and two others crossed in front of the lead rider. Next thing I know I see spots coming out of the woods. The Stupid thing jumped right into me chest high. Next thing I know I am pulling my foot out from under the bike and reaching for the kill switch As the tip over switch did its thing just as I got close to the switch.

So needless to say I am ready to by almost any snake oil that might Keep the Hooved Rats away.
Has any one had luck with the Hornet?  Just dont want to go threw any thing more serious then a sprained foot if I don't have to. (Plus a scratched cowling and Tank. and a Crushed Saddle bag) :nap

Any Thoughts or comments.    I am pretty sure I might start Hunting again as well!!!

QuoteAre deer whistles a deterrent?

There isn't much reliable research that supports their value, and there is even some research that found a negative effect from whistles. Do your own research and make your own decision.

A good resource is the research paper "Hearing Sensitivity in White-tailed Deer."

your user name is pure irony for this thread........................... :icon_wink:

I feel your pain having been there and done that, too. In my case the animal ran beside me for a few yards then jinked left into my front wheel, so I was down in the proverbial flash. Unfortunately I was less lucky and sustained a broken radius (held together with screws and plates now) in my right arm, plus a significant friction burn inside the knee of my leathers.

As to deer whistles..... personally I am unconvinced of their effectiveness. All the suggestions in the piece Mustang quote make a lot of sense imho.

Glad to hear you survived, must be a real scary experience, personally and fortunately only come close a few times.

It's one of those things that you'll probably never know if they work or not, because if they do then you won't come across gem again and there are so many other factors involved.

I used one for some time when riding in Asia until it fell off after a spell of off road work. Did it work, see above  :^_^ I got it in a gun shop in the highlands of Scotland and haven't found them on the shelves again since our I would bought another. I also used a set of auxiliary lights that were angled slightly towards the road verges to pick them up before they decide to leap across. I think awareness is probably your best tool but good visibility of the danger areas is going to give you that split second more to react.

End of the day, would I cry over spending $10 on an unobtrusive gadget stuck under the front fairing? Definitely not.  Would I rely on it and batter on regardless. Same answer.

I had moose jump out in front of me a couple of times when I lived in Newfoundland. That was bowel loosening scary, and I was driving a Ford Escort, I hate to think what it must be like on two wheels. I asked about the whistles then, back in 1990, and could not get any consensus. They are cheap, but would you rely on one?

Methinks you can navel gaze a little too much on this topic!

We had an 18yr old lad killed about two miles from me here in Norfolk three years ago.  A deer jumped a hedge and knocked him off while doing about 60mph.  Strictly speaking, it wasn't the deer that killed him though, it was the car that ran him over immediately afterwards.
