Title: Tiger Parts Cross-Reference Guide
Post by: Stretch on January 14, 2008, 03:35:05 PM
If you know of a specific part that can be used on a Tiger, please be so kind as to let us all in on the secret.

Please post the brand and part number, and its application.

For example, since my nearest Triumph dealer is a two-hour ride away....

The oil filter currently on my '05 Girly is for a late-model Honda GL1800 Goldwing...  Honda part # 15410-MCJ-000

OIL FILTERS

Links to a lot of good info about motorcycle oil filters, and automotive filters that can be cross-referenced to motorcycle applications...

http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/FilterXRef.html (http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/FilterXRef.html)

http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/Co ... OilFilters (http://www.calsci.com/motorcycleinfo/Consumables.html#OilFilters)

K & N oil filters have a handy 17mm nut welded to the end of their filters, allowing one to remove the filter from the recessed confines of
the Tiger sump without having to buy a special oil filter tool.

Steamers don't use spin-on oil filters, but a replaceable internal element.  The part number for K & N oil filters for carbureted 885 engines is KN-192.
Fram CH6012 from Wal Mart and most auto part stores  ...even Amazon.com

Fuel-injected 885i and 955i's need a spin-on KN-204.

I have heard of folks using a KN-191, but its diameter is 71mm, a bit bigger than the KN-204's 68mm.  The 191 may or may not fit up into the sump.  It's pretty tight up in there.

Roadies use a spin-on KN-204

(add a C to the spin-on part number if you want it chromed)   <!-- s:mrgreen: -->:mrgreen:<!-- s:mrgreen: -->

Also:

Quote from: fluxJust a heads up to save anyone doing some searching... I just bought and installed a WalMart SuperTech ST6607 oil filter on my '02.  It was less than $3.  They sell Mobil 1 Racing 4T full synth oil there as well.

FUEL FILTERS

Quote from: "tigerdown"Don't buy a fuel filter from your local Triumph dealer,as they will charge £35    Instead get the filter as fitted to the BMW oilheads or
K series they're all the same, I used mahle KL145 cost £9 Exactly the same filter :D

And...

Quote from: "Tom Herold"You can also use a Purolator F20011 fuel filter to replace your stock Triumph one. Same size, same fittings, good all the way around.  They're a high quality unit and can be found at your local parts store for around $6.  I've been running one in the Sprint for about 6k miles.

Also...

Quote from: "GWL"I have just bought a Ducati fuel filter for my Tiger. I know people sometimes use BMW filters but wasn't sure if anyone knew about the Ducati ones as well.It only cost £9.00 whereas the Triumph one was £24.00. Whats even better is that I got it from my Triumph dealer!!  (who also happens to be a Ducati dealer too). everyone will probabaly say "yeah we knew that, its old news" but just in case you didn't I thought I'd share it with you. :D  Part # 42540041B. Exactly same size and shape as Triumph one.

perhaps I'll start to ride like Nicky Hayden now! :ImaPoser

CHAIN AND SPROCKETS

Galfer makes pads and rotors for all makes as well.

DID makes our chain in a 530VM Xring design.

My sprogs came from JT, but I think AFAM makes them, too.  :icon_wink:

BRAKE CALIPERS

Quote from: "aebbern"Found what I needed... scored a front caliper off a Buell Blast on EBay (it's a direct bolt-on for my Tiger)
and another one off a Bonneville from the RAT list.

Aebbern's bike is a 2002, but judging from the brake pad part numbers listed above, these calipers should work on the
front of Steamers (VIN 71699 and above) and all 1999-2006 Tigers, and the rear caliper for 1999-2004 Tigers (wire spoke wheels).

WHEELS

The only non-Tiger wheels I've heard of that will work on a Tiger are Dymag wheels.  They are not available in 19-inch
sizes for the front, and TigerTriple members have reported that they only fit on 1999-2004 Tigers, replacing wire spoke wheels.

If anybody knows of other wheels that will work, please let me know and I'll post it here.

Fuel Injection Mapping

http://www.tuneboy.com.au/index.htm (http://www.tuneboy.com.au/index.htm)

Some Tiger owners have successfully used the Tuneboy system to program their own fuel injection maps, instead of paying a dealer
to do it with their Triumph® computer.

The advantage is that the Tuneboy can have several different maps loaded into it, so a Tiger owner can quickly download the map that
best suits his intended purpose (racing, economy, etc), or even build his own custom maps.

It's about the size of a Gameboy® computer game system and comes with a USB cable for downloading programs from the Tuneboy to the
bike.  There are anti-piracy features built in to the system, preventing somebody from buying a Tuneboy and then charging people to program
their bikes.  Read the Tuneboy web page for details.

FUEL TANK FITTINGS

The plastic fuel tank fittings on earlier Girly models were prone to splitting and cracking, spraying gasoline (petrol    ) all over the engine and
electrics.

This was the subject of a factory recall, and by now most bikes have been retrofitted with the newer style fittings.

But even the replacement Triumph® fittings are part plastic.

Team Triumph of Wisconsin (USA) is marketing their own set of replacement all-metal fuel fittings...

Click Here:  http://www.rideteamtriumph.com/tiger.htm (http://www.rideteamtriumph.com/tiger.htm)

Their web site isn't set up for on-line shopping.  You'll have to call toll-free 1-877-869-6910 and place your order over the telephone.

These won't work on later 955's with the non-return fuel system.  Pull the small black side cover from the left side of your bike, and look at the gold-colored metal plate bolted to the side of the gas tank.  If it has two fuel fittings side-by-side, the Team Triumph fittings will work.  If you have one fuel fitting coming out of the metal plate, bent down, these won't work.

WHEEL BEARINGS

Bearing numbers are standardized throughout the industry.  A local bearing supplier can sell you the exact same bearing for
a fraction of a motorcycle dealer's price.

1992-1998 Steamers, and 1999-2004 Spoke-Wheel Girlies
Front Wheel Bearings (2):  6303 DU
Rear Wheel Bearings:  6204 DU , 6304 DU (one of each)
Sprocket Carrier Bearing (1):  6305 DU

'05-'06 Cast Wheels
Front Wheel Bearings (2): 6303 DU
Rear Wheel Bearings (2):  6204 DU
Sprocket Carrier bearing (1):  6205 DU

DU meaning a seal on both sides of the bearing.  The designation 2RS is also used.  Regardless, make sure there are seals on both sides
of your aftermarket bearings.

Quote from: "Blacktiger"When I did mine I managed to get the taper roller from a bearing supplier but had to go to Triumph for the top ball race. I think I remember the bearing supplier saying that the top bearing was a Triumph specific part (because of the circlip) which they couldn't order. Triumph pt # T3800055.

Quote from: "blacktiger"I got my replacements at a local bearing supplier. The numbers are :-
Top = 6205DDUNR
Bottom = 32006JRRS Which comes with the seal attached.
Hardest thing was getting the lower bearing off the steering stem.

I'd recommend the Purolator Pure 1.  Several sources have taken them apart and found significantly more filter area than other brands.  The stock size is: PL14612, but if you have a skid plate or don't go off road, you can get the PL14610 which is an inch longer.

GEAR SHIFTER

I remembered EagleFeather got some after market shifter for his Tiger. This is what he sent me:

Nice Memory - yea it was me.

it was a Sunline dirtbike shifter from a yz/wr450. it was the right length and had the right curve profile to work without any modifications. I love it.

Here are the pics;

Just a note..
When I bought my '98 Steamer...USED..
I thought... service on this will be a nightmare!

But I did get a little wise....
On the BIG Triumph Tiger board... I started printing off all the
'how too' and part numbers stuff; 3-hole punching it and placed it in a
3-ring binder categorized by 'area'  ( suspension, brakes, chain, electric, etc).

After 4 years I had a very nice library of information. When I sold my bike... I sold that binder for a reasonable price and I am certain that whoever has it now has added to it. It was better than the Triumph manual!

MIRRORS

Today I found some mirrors at my local shop that were $13 each and fit perfectly.  Round mirrors though, which to me don't look as cool as the rectangular ones.

BikeMaster Part No: 60-0040

The dude at the shop said they were a "standard 10mm thread".

1993-1998 Tiger rear wheel bearings

You need 1 of each bearing # and they can be purchased from McMaster Carr or just about any electric motor repair house

The bearing #'s are : 6204 rs , 6304 rs , 6305 rs
the rs simply means sealed bearing  .
the diff in price is extreme
Triumph gets about $30 a bearing
McMaster Carr $30 will buy all three
the McMaster Carr p/n's are
5972k45  $7.72    same as 6204 rs
5972k56   $12.03   same as 6304 rs
5972k57   $12.87    same as 6305 rs

Radiator Cap

The Triumph caps are prone to weakening before their time, allowing vapor and coolant to escape, resulting in an overly hot Tiger.

The Triumph caps are $19 at a dealer, IF they have one in stock.

ArizonaKid discovered that a Stant 10227 radiator cap, a replacement for 80's Toyotas (as well as 1988-91 Honda Civic), is a perfect fit for a Tiger, available at auto parts stores 'round the world.  About $7.

Edit for a new development:

Quote from: walker

The stant 10227 (replaced by the newer 11227) is only a 13 psi cap. A good replacement might be the 11233 - it's 16 PSI, which is right at the 1.1 BAR that triumph specifies.

Same dimensions, just a different main spring.

To add...

955i ALTERNATOR STATOR

Quote from: "plasticrat"have since found out that a g75 will fit at a fraction of the price of a genuine one saved 75% just had to shorten he wires & put genuine plug on

Thanks for the scoop.  :thumbsup

Some details:

http://www.electrexworld.co.uk/erol.htm ... oe%3DUTF-8 (http://www.electrexworld.co.uk/erol.html#1072x0&&http%3A%252F%252Fwww.google.com%252Fsearch%3Fclient%3Dsafari%26rls%3Den%26q%3Dg75+stator%26ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8)

It appears that 955 Tigers share the same alternator as a Honda VFR-750F, Yamaha JZR600, and Yamaha YX600, (Stator Size 103/42/24mm).

And this...  http://www.bbbikeshop.co.uk/acatalog/Br ... s_140.html (http://www.bbbikeshop.co.uk/acatalog/Browse___Best___Buy_Kawasaki_Alternators_140.html)
... stating that a G75 stator also fits a Kawasaki ZX12R

And this...  http://roadstarclinic.com/component/opt ... /id,27179/ (http://roadstarclinic.com/component/option,com_fireboard/Itemid,187/func,view/catid,13/id,27179/)
...saying that a G175 for a Yamaha Road Star is a direct replacement for a G75.

Before all this came to light, I ordered my spare stator from ElectroSport...  http://www.electrosport.com/street/stators.php (http://www.electrosport.com/street/stators.php)

So... if you're out on the road and your 955i alternator shits the bed, you ought to be able to get your hands on a replacement through a dealer for the following bikes:

Also, aftermarket charging system parts (with a one-year replacement warranty) are available from Rick's Motorsport Electrics.  The website doesn't specifically list Triumph applications, but they do stock them.  Give them a call or e-mail...  http://www.ricksmotorsportelectrics.com/ (http://www.ricksmotorsportelectrics.com/)

REAR WHEEL BEARINGS, 2001-2004 SPOKE WHEELS

Quote from: "simonxrv"does anyone know the standard bearing number for the rear wheel of a 2001 spoked wheel model?

Here ya go...

Quote from: "Mustang"a steamer rear wheel takes a 6204 2RS and a 6304 2RS in the hub and a 6305 LU in the sprocket carrier

bike bandit has the same part numbers for the Steamer and the 2001 Girly so I would assume that spoked Girly wheels take the same bearings as a Steamer .

Quote from: "simonxrv"thanks.  I'm very confussed now though.  I was using the bike and there was an awful noise like a bag of bolts coming from the rear wheel so i guessed it was the bearing as last time it was serviced they warned me it was going anyway.  I've never replaced a bearing before.  so i took the wheel off last night but i can't figure out which one is gone.  Anyone help?  Or if its not it what could it have been?

definitely the symptoms and sounds a bad bearing makes .
With the wheel mounted on bike and the ass end lifted so the wheel is off the ground there should also be some play or looseness that is noticeable when you try to twist the wheel side to side .

If only one bearing is bad , you should replace them all anyway and replace the seals also .

The whole package for parts (2 seals and 3 bearings ) from bike bandit or the dealer will cost around 120 dollars for the parts .

the bearings can be had from a bearing supplier for approx. 10-15 dollars each , but you still need to get the seals from a dealer or bike bandit .

I just had this same problem.  My bike started throwing coolant at me.... well... actually it was dripping to the front wheel which sports a TKC80... the knobs were catching coolant and throwing it back up all across my dash, windsreen, and helmet.  Blech!

Anyway, I went to HD before I saw this post to source a brass one myself.  I found that the 3/8" is not the right size.  The standard piece of shit plastic stocker is 8mm.

I ended up ordering another stocker from Triumph USA.  It was less than $1.50 but I had to wait a few days to get it.

But then I went for a ride last night only to find it's still leaking.  I think the coolant reservoir cap that fits to the dash is somehow leaking.

Anyways, just a heads up that the HD solution is not a 100% correct fit.
Title: Tigger replacement indicators

TURN SIGNALS

Three of the four on my 02 Girly were badly perished and cracking at the flexible finned rubber/plastic stalk. Triumph wanted $100 AUS for them and stated that there were no aftermarket alternatives. Yeah right.

The indicators are a bit unusual as they use a small metric screw, offset to the body of the indicator to mount it to the frame.

My local independant shop guy and I trawled through a few catalogs and came up with these:

They are an MCS part listed as front indicators for KLX450R and Gas Gas dirt bikes. The mount is virtually identical to the Triumph and they have the flexible stalk more minor oppsies in the dirt. Part no IK29FL/H for the left front. I've lost the box but assume the right front would be IK29FR/H.

The wiring connection isifferent but I just snipped the fitting off the old Triumph indicators and soldered them on to the new ones.

Being dirt bike indicators they have a drain hole at the bottom of the lens that I managed to install wrong way up....... They will fit front or rear, if you like the look of them.

The best part? $19.95 each.

Steamers:  TB-9091

Girlies:  TB-9097

Has anyone found an alternative paper air filter element for an '06?  I am not a fan of K&N on daily drivers. Race vehicles are fine as they are serviced after every race, but I feel the K&N lets too much dirt through if it's not being oiled and serviced frequently. And we all know that is not something we want to do on a Tiger.

Got these slightly extended arm (both height & width) from Sprint Manufacturing (http://www.triumphparts.gbr.cc/) .

They are the same pattern as the originals, so I am told, in the short use I have been able to make of them they have been good. Vibe free at legal speeds and just neatly match the bar ends for width. Note that I have non standard bars fitted.

I opted to fit rubber boots to give a slightly neater look and keep the crap out of the threads but the boots available from Sprint need a small grommet to match the bar diameter.
Title: Steamer Screen Powerbronze Flip
Post by: Sin_Tiger on September 19, 2009, 07:23:56 AM
After a good deal of help from other forum users, thank you, and a few calls to Powerbronze "you want a screen for a steam motorbike"  :BangHead  the website page does not show any photos of a Steamer for that part, it's a Trophy or a Trident, which is a bit worrying when you are trying to plave an order

I managed to identify this screen as an alternative to the original shorty. Been good so far at legal speeds and keeps a lot more rain and bugs off than the original, noise and buffeting are of course helmet and rider dependant. Perfect fit, no noticable flex or vibration at speed.

Reasonable price considering it appears to be made to order if the part label is to be believed and the edge piping is thrown in. This is the "Light Tint" variation, not sure if all the colour variations are available but might be if they are making to order. Last three digits denote the colour.
Title: Tiger (Steamer) Ignition Module Replacement
Post by: Colonel Nikolai on October 08, 2009, 04:01:09 PM
IGNITER (IGNITION MODULE)

The Ignitech SPARKER TCIP4 FULL unit from Ignitech is purportedly a plug and play replacement for the Steamer. Costs about $200 compared to the $740 for the Gill OEM unit retail and is programmable. I have not tried it, but I asked them:

QuoteWill the Ignitech TCIP4 unit work as a replacement for the original
faulty Gill igniter on a 1996 Triumph Tiger?

Thanks,

Nick

Got a response from an Ignitech tech:

QuoteHello

Yes.
Has original ignition connector with 10 pin or 18 pin?
We can offer our ignition TCIP4 full. It is with adapter cable to original
connector (plug and play).
If you send us your address we send you invoice.

Regards

Jan Matous
Ignitech s.r.o.

So I guess you just need to specify whether it's 10 or 18 pin and it'll work. Hope this helps someone other than me!

Apparently my 96 steamer is a 10-pin connector for th Gill ignition module.

Renthal Fatbar Handlebars High ATV Bend

these are about the right bend for the tiger and are approx 33 inches wide .
they are 1 1/8 inch bars though so not sure about clamps and controls

but seriously look for at ATV handlebars as they match the stock tiger bend pretty close, usually they are the only ones that even come close .

Pro Taper SE Handlebars (ATV)

these are 7/8ths bars and can be had for under 60 bucks and should be plug and play

I tried this on my 885i and the shifter would not fit on the shaft.  The curve looked right, but something was not quite right.  I even tried opening the gap on the shifter with a screwdriver.

Just an FYI for the 99-00 Girly crowd

it was a Sunline dirtbike shifter from a yz/wr450. it was the right length and had the right curve profile to work without any modifications. I love it.

I just changed the ignition switch on a 94 Tiger. I used a Kawasaki 7 wire switch. Fits straight on, steering lock even works. I had to change a couple of wires to get it working. Cost 50€ on eBay which is much cheaper that the Triumph part. Just Google 736901 and you should find one on eBay.

Title: Yamaha Oil Filters
Post by: jnutiger on October 22, 2010, 05:54:48 AM
Just a heads up for those of you considering the use of Yamaha oil filters on their Tigers.  The filter on the left is the 5GH-13440-00 and was mentioned earlier as a replacement.  When installed on my 2006,  it hangs down below the pan about a half inch and is vulnerable to impact. The filter on the right is the 5GH-13440-20 and is a perfect fit.  Have a skid Plate?  Stick with the larger one.

I'd recommend the Purolator Pure 1.  Several sources have taken them apart and found significantly more filter area than other brands.  The stock size is: PL14612, but if you have a skid plate or don't go off road, you can get the PL14610 which is an inch longer.

There is also a ~$100 replaceable element filter, but I cant find the link right now.

Quote from: "Stretch"Radiator Cap

The Triumph caps are prone to weakening before their time, allowing vapor and coolant to escape, resulting in an overly hot Tiger.

The Triumph caps are $19 at a dealer, IF they have one in stock.

ArizonaKid discovered that a Stant 10227 radiator cap, a replacement for 80's Toyotas (as well as 1988-91 Honda Civic), is a perfect fit for a Tiger, available at auto parts stores 'round the world.  About $7.

Edit for a new development:

Quote from: "walker"The stant 10227 (replaced by the newer 11227) is only a 13 psi cap. A good replacement might be the 11233 - it's 16 PSI, which is right at the 1.1 BAR that triumph specifies.

Same dimensions, just a different main spring.

To add...

Quote from: "flux"FYI:
This cap fits these cars:

ACURA   (1989 - 2005)
CHEVROLET   (1985 - 1988)
CHRYSLER   (1995 - 1999)
DODGE   (1995 - 1999)
EAGLE   (1995 - 1998)
FORD   (1989 - 2009)
GEO   (1989 - 1993)
HONDA   (1990 - 2007)
HYUNDAI   (1998 - 2008)
INFINITI   (1997 - 2007)
ISUZU   (1985 - 2004)
KIA   (2001 - 2008)
LEXUS   (1992 - 2007)
MAZDA   (1993 - 2008)
MERCURY   (1989 - 2001)
MITSUBISHI   (1995 - 2008)
NISSAN   (1990 - 2008)
SUBARU   (1999 - 2008)
SUZUKI   (2004 - 2008)
TOYOTA   (1994 - 2008)

Advance Auto did not carry the 11233 cap and it wasn't in the computer at all. They did have a 10233 so I brought it home and took a look and dimensions looked good. The cap is also 16 psi so the rating is correct. Put it on and seems to function well.

UPDATE: APPEARS THAT THIS CAP MAY OPEN UP FLOW TO THE OVERFLOW TOO EARLY CAUSING BOILING OVER. GOT THE FACTORY CAP BACK ON A WHILE BACK AND CAN CONFIRM THAT THE STANT 10233 IN THE WRONG CAP. PLEASE DON'T TRY THIS UNLESS YOU LIKE BOIL OVERS!

BRAKE PIN PLUG.

You know, the little metal plug that screws over the pad retaining pin on the Girlies and Steamers and gets rounded out in no time.

Go to Triumph and they only sell a kit of the plug and a new pin, about £8

Go to Honda and ask for a 45203-MG3-016  £2.35,  thats better but still dear for what it is really

Title: Fuel / Gas Cap
Post by: GasDepot on February 18, 2012, 11:47:48 PM
Hi All,
The key on my gas cap stopped working so I had to bust the latch and I was smelling gas now.
The stealership wanted $150 for a new cap which meant another key or a trip to the locksmith to see if maybe they could fix the f'ed up one.
Looking on the web found one for $100 on ebay.
The ebay one said it would work on a Daytona, Speedtriple, Sprint RS/ST, Tiger or TT600.
After checking Bike Bandit the part # from my 2000 900i matched a 2000 Daytona.
I wanted to get ride of the pesky key anyway.
The Daytona has a few after market choices.
For $65 to my house from Slingshot Racing (http://www.slingshotracing.net/catalog/triumph-cnc-racing-gas-cap-p-125.html) I went for
(http://www.slingshotracing.net/catalog/images/web_images2/ApriliaBlackGasCap.jpg)
After 6 days of emails back and forth here is what I got.
Old and new cap
(http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-_B0u3iea_Ao/T0Ao3VwJNHI/AAAAAAAAA14/nYI2gfFTIZw/s400/Underside.JPG)

The fit is right on I could feel the gasket set when I tightened the outer cap down.
It looks like there is some pressure relief I have to put some miles down to know for sure.
The cap does not cause a vacuum in the gas tank.
I don't know how well the cap will hole when the bike takes a nap.
I'm heading to Death Valley end of March the bike may get tired then.
Any problems I will post them.
Rubber Side Down,

A very close replacement for the originals, a fraction longer arm also used by Honda, is available from Busch & Muller as attached.

Another close one is a "folding stalk" from somewhere just west of Guangzhou, they don't look terribly robust, the stalk is slightly on the short side, the view can get slightly fuzzy at motorway speed but so far have stood up and the view is wide, undistorted and clear. (I'll add a photo later)
