Title: Beaker?
Post by: Tiger-G on October 06, 2010, 07:45:05 PM
Hi Guys,

(Slightly tongue in cheek) A friendly message to our American friends - please don't go naming the Tiger 800 without consulting the Brits, or we'll end up with something as bad as "Girly" again.

Remember we're men, men's men, with hairy chests and six packs. We want a manly name for the Tiger 800 and the 1200 when it comes along !!  :)

Cheers.

Ok, we'll call the 800 the 'slim-fast' since it should be slimmer than previous tigers while still being pretty fast.  Does that meet with your approval?

ummmmmm.............the Girly moniker was coined by a Brit :ImaPoser

Google "Jeremy Sagar "
he's the one who coined the phrase on the Yahoo Triumph Tiger list  way back when the Girly bike came out and naturally he was a steamer pilot. Which BTW is where the name steamer came from

The new Tigers need a name.  I think caution should be completely abandoned and we should name it without seeing it first.

So above this post are a few suggestions.  Feel free to add a few of your own and I'll add them if I like them.  (Why, yes, sir the power has certainly gone directly to my head!)

Beaker sounds to me like a name that you would give to a BMW.  Either Beaker or Bill the Cat for those headlights.  And by the way, as a Girly owner, I am confident enough in my manhood that I don't mind that name.  I guess that while both names may be kind of dumb - it is a convenient sort of shorthand to have when talking about the bikes.  Land Rover uses Series I, Series II, and so on and even that broke down after a while.

By looking at those pics and thinking it further over, yes its Beaker from the front, but there is more to it. I think it looks a little like a Ducati Multistrada (not the new one) with a Tiger engine.
So maybe its a  backyard crossbreed cat, a modern Tricati? They just painted the red tubular frame silver.

And, as with real backyard cats: Its shy so very few has seen it, it hides in boxes, it likes to hunt in the woods and in the streets, and when spotted, the only thing you got to see is the tail.

Maybe we just should call it The Backyard Cat or simply AlleyCat?? :D

You can't call it Adventure, because it's going to have a limited range with that puney tank. The 1200 is going to be the Adventure Tiger. The tank on it is huge (and ugly) and will have a range worthy of the ADV name.

Hey - Gadge had an offering worthy of consideration. TOM CAT. I like it. Tom's are scrappy, stealthy, independent, resourceful, usually have lots of scratches & screw lots of stuff. We havent had a war with UK for 198 years - and since we're already spread a bit thin...lets try to resolve this one amicably. There is a motion on the floor...

462 lbs dry? That's a lot heavier than the BMW F800GS which comes in at 390 lbs dry.

Mind you if this is dry weight then we have a bike that is lighter displacement than the Steamer, has a few more horses prolly less torque and weighs the same. Crazy. Say it ain't so.

I stopped at a weighscale the other day and my Steamer was 240kg with a full tank of fuel.  That works out to 530lbs.  The actual weight of this new bike is going to depend a lot on how big the tank is.

Beaker has a nice ring to it, but it just seems wrong to name the bike after a part which after all, seems to serve no useful purpose and is a blatent BMTroubeyou copy.

I like Cub

Agreed. Yet the stickered dry weight of the Steamer is 460 lbs.

Having seen the photos now, sure we could call the XC "Beaker" but the ordinary 800 hasn't got one of those so it's sort of "Beakerless", so maybe open the debate again.

It's only the XC that has the Beak, so why not Beaker and Cub

Laddie

Named so for it's trellis frame that looks like a ladder, plus it plays off the Girly name...  bout time we had a Ladd instead of a Lass, eh?

Adjustable handlebars.
Seat height 810-830mm. (short leg riders need not apply )
Wet weight 210kg. (heavy bastard huh )
95 ps (98bhp aprox').

That's wet weight ladies and gents, which over here means ready to roll with a full tank. That is competitive with the 800GS.

95 ps will be more than enough on a slippery muddy track and the lower weight means it will run harder than a Girly on the road. Let's hope that the aerodynamics area bit better

How 'bout 'Steelie' in honour of the new frame, which to me is one of the bikes most attractive and practical features

Not a fan of naming anything after something old, it's bad enough over here when someone says what bike have you got to reply Triumph Tiger and get the usual spiel about them having one in the 60s, hwich you have to break into and say no the 900 fuel injection model.

So Tiger Cub is a non starter for me
Title:
Post by: LTB on October 25, 2010, 07:13:46 PM
The F800GS has a wet weight of 207 kg and that's with a small 16l fuel tank.
I hope the Tiger 800XC has a larger tank.
Well, my cousin bought a new -10 F800GS a month ago and with 10 more horses the 800XC should be faster, at least on paper.
It will not be faster with me on it regardless. He's such a good driver that he beat me with his XT660, on twisties and gravel, with me on my Girly 955i.

I like the nickname 'Addies' - as in 'The Adventure Bikes'
You have the normal 'Addie' and you have the 'sXC-Addie'

So there's:
- Steamers
- Girlies
- Roadies
&
- Addies

Then in 2012/2013 there'll be the 1200 ccm 'Grand-Addie'

 :)

Don`t hate me, but..............................

I`d call it disappointing.

Looking at the latest pics, i now realise whats wrong with it.

It looks unfinished, a bit like its had the bodywork removed and not replaced.

It looks like the seat is just sitting on the frame, and the headlight assembly looks like its just been thrown on with no thought.

Just my humble opinion.  :D

Although just thinking if the forks and wheels will fit my Steamer.......... 8)

Is this finished? Beaker is something a kid has a drink in. Terrible name for a bike.

I've decided the name should be GOAT because the acronyms are endless to describe this bike.
Goes On All Terrain.
Goes Over Any Track.
Great Offroad Adventure Tiger.
Goes Offroad And Tarmac.
etc. etc.

Anyone else agree?

The existing tigers are the steamer, Girly and the (highly imaginative) roadie.  Which are, let's face it, not sensible or even particularly tough, exciting sounding names.  Other bikers ride fazers, bandits, hogs, blades, gixers, ninjas and so on.  I don't think we should try and make macho names to compete - I think we have a point of difference and it is our ridiculousness.  Girly, I ask you!!!???!  And for the record a 'steamer' round our way means a big pile of hot smelly crap - which, sometimes, I have to admit, when it breaks down, may just be a valid comparison.   :Topes

We need to think of a name even more ridiculous than Beaker or I suggest Beaker is the winner and we close the poll and the legacy of stupidity continues!
