Hi Guys,
(Slightly tongue in cheek) A friendly message to our American friends - please don't go naming the Tiger 800 without consulting the Brits, or we'll end up with something as bad as "Girly" again.
Remember we're men, men's men, with hairy chests and six packs. We want a manly name for the Tiger 800 and the 1200 when it comes along !! :)
Cheers.
Then stop building curvy bikes with mascara over the headlights. :P
Still reckon the new bike looks like Beaker from the Muppets...
and the new Speed Triple looks like Dame Edna Everage from the front.. :D
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EAtBki0PsC0
Ok, we'll call the 800 the 'slim-fast' since it should be slimmer than previous tigers while still being pretty fast. Does that meet with your approval?
Geof
ummmmmm.............the Girly moniker was coined by a Brit :ImaPoser
Google "Jeremy Sagar "
he's the one who coined the phrase on the Yahoo Triumph Tiger list way back when the Girly bike came out and naturally he was a steamer pilot. Which BTW is where the name steamer came from
Best we contact him for advice then,,,,
I like Beaker! :D
Yeah. "Beaker" would absolutely be a suitable name.
And the 2 gentlemen apearing in the end of the Muppet show video are probably Tiger-riders too.....
Quote from: "JetdocX"Then stop building curvy bikes with mascara over the headlights. :P
Funny ! :D
Early Girlies had mascara, later ones didn't. Look here:

It seems we have a name, "Beaker" suits it to a tee
"Here Kitty Kitty" or...I think 'HELLO KITTY' sounds pretty manly. Plus the stickers & farkles are are already available.
I was thinkin it should be called ' Red Herring ' but one has been spotted on the road !! then i thought it should be called ' The Teaser ' as thats what Triumph have been do'in with there ads !! so i'll just have to agree with the others who named it.......
Beaker !! :ImaPoser

ps STOP PULLIN OUR CHAINS MR TRIUMPH !!!!!!!!!
+1 for BEAKER!
I love it.
Mustang, can you do a poll? Not sure if any of us pleabs can.
tett
The new Tigers need a name. I think caution should be completely abandoned and we should name it without seeing it first.
So above this post are a few suggestions. Feel free to add a few of your own and I'll add them if I like them. (Why, yes, sir the power has certainly gone directly to my head!)
Hopefully the engine doesn't sound like Beaker singing that song.
What happened to the CUB?
We all dreamed and called it the cub for years now?
825ish is still the smallest new tiger ever made.......Cub?
"Beaker" looking out on you!

Tweek!
There you go, you leave it to a yank and this is what we get :(
Proves my point (lol)
Cub
well, if people BEAKER keep repeating the word BEAKER then it BEAKER just might become BEAKER the de facto BEAKER name for the new tiger. BEAKER.
I'm already starting to like it.
BEAKER
BEAKER
BEAKER
yeah, I Think I like it.

I believe the idea came from one of you Brits, actually.
And i can't edit the poll, so I can't add any more options. Maybe His Mustangness can make fix it for me.
I do believe Cub should be in there.
..... and if he can... shouldn't he add Adventure, if only because thats seems to be a name they're calling it in the press????

What about the Scout
The go-anywhere little annoying Tiger Cub Scout :D

Cub might be in reserve for the 500 twin that's rumoured to eb on the cards as well.
Watever they call, it'll be Beaker to us :D
I guess Tiger Light (like Marlboro light) would be a good name.
simply "LIGHT"
I like "flying" as in Flying Tiger

OK, Beaker it is then ;-)
But is that both of them ???????
It can't be Beaker and Beaker ??
OK, Tiger 800 XC is Beaker but what's Tiger 800 ???

Steamer
Girly
Roadie
Beaker
Beaker is too close to.... err breaker,,,, and what with the acents and all I'm not sure thats a good thing.
But not wanting to be a spoiler... How about Muppet
thumbs up for beaker!
i'm an expert - in the late 80s I owned a suzuki dr750Sbig - everyone laughing out loud "look... a bike with a beak!" :D
in a few weeks time we'll have the first beaker live performance here in italy (eicma milan december 2>>>7) what if I shoot a photo with a beaker puppet seated on the bike? does it exist? let me know if someone own one!

i wonder if Triumph has bagged all the XC plates already !!

Awesome
Beaker sounds to me like a name that you would give to a BMW. Either Beaker or Bill the Cat for those headlights. And by the way, as a Girly owner, I am confident enough in my manhood that I don't mind that name. I guess that while both names may be kind of dumb - it is a convenient sort of shorthand to have when talking about the bikes. Land Rover uses Series I, Series II, and so on and even that broke down after a while.
I vote for Cub.
http://triumphtiger.net/T2T0C0S9_a/pict ... 742925.jpg (http://triumphtiger.net/T2T0C0S9_a/picture.php?img=img-1286742925.jpg)
By looking at those pics and thinking it further over, yes its Beaker from the front, but there is more to it. I think it looks a little like a Ducati Multistrada (not the new one) with a Tiger engine.
So maybe its a backyard crossbreed cat, a modern Tricati? They just painted the red tubular frame silver.
And, as with real backyard cats: Its shy so very few has seen it, it hides in boxes, it likes to hunt in the woods and in the streets, and when spotted, the only thing you got to see is the tail.
Maybe we just should call it The Backyard Cat or simply AlleyCat?? :D
I still like beaker.
I did like the suggestion "muppet". That was a good one! AND the muppets DID have an alley cat (well, he had an eye patch)

How about TOM,it works on a few levels
TOM = Triumphs Overland Machine
TOM CAT Obvious I know
and TOM is the nick name for a British Paratrooper = Tough as nails go anywhere.
Gary
I vote for Beaker... but not because of the muppet... because the bike HAS A BEAK above the fender.
Or... TigerCub works too...
Guys,
Beaker is a crap name, and proves what I said in my initial post
no, the name "cub" is CRAP!. just call it what it is - "ADVENTURE", or ADV for short.
Not liking ''Beaker'' neither.
I'd call it the ''Goblin'' (as in Green Goblin).
You can't call it Adventure, because it's going to have a limited range with that puney tank. The 1200 is going to be the Adventure Tiger. The tank on it is huge (and ugly) and will have a range worthy of the ADV name.
I think once the bike is launched and ridden, the name will come :)
I think it should be aptly named "Finally!"
I have an idea!
Let's pick a name that will make you want one so badly, that you will GLADLY sell your existing Girly, steamer or roadie, to me, at a rock bottom price.
That's the name I want to see!

Hey - Gadge had an offering worthy of consideration. TOM CAT. I like it. Tom's are scrappy, stealthy, independent, resourceful, usually have lots of scratches & screw lots of stuff. We havent had a war with UK for 198 years - and since we're already spread a bit thin...lets try to resolve this one amicably. There is a motion on the floor...
Admittedly Beaker sucks. Though I love the photochop of the Triumph brochure!
Tom sucks, too, IMO.
Jphish thanks for the support, but anything has to be better than Beaker.
Have a quick butchers at this, don't blink or you may miss the Tiger, just enough to tease.

Tiger 800 Adventure Just sayin...............
Ahh Mustang, dont be so serious on this :D , did Triumph name the previous Tigers Steamer, Girly and Roadie 8)
...
that's it!!!!!! we should call it " THE FONZ" , or a "fonzie" some one photo shop the fonz on that thing
Guess Mustang's got a point. But then who cares what the actual manufacturer names it ? The question is...what matches up well with Steamer, Girly, Roadie ? Hopefully this important issue will be settled by the time I get back from Africa. I cant stand the suspense!

So it's still a lard ass, 210kg ain't no lightweight. I bet that's dry weight too
Just got round to reading this week's MCN, they will write up a world first ever non-factory ride on the 800 next week.
So what is the beak for? If I mounted one on my Girly would that be an improvement?
Quote from: "John Stenhouse"So it's still a lard ass, 210kg ain't no lightweight. I bet that's dry weight too
462 lbs dry? That's a lot heavier than the BMW F800GS which comes in at 390 lbs dry.
Mind you if this is dry weight then we have a bike that is lighter displacement than the Steamer, has a few more horses prolly less torque and weighs the same. Crazy. Say it ain't so.

I stopped at a weighscale the other day and my Steamer was 240kg with a full tank of fuel. That works out to 530lbs. The actual weight of this new bike is going to depend a lot on how big the tank is.
Beaker has a nice ring to it, but it just seems wrong to name the bike after a part which after all, seems to serve no useful purpose and is a blatent BMTroubeyou copy.
I like Cub

Agreed. Yet the stickered dry weight of the Steamer is 460 lbs.
Fat Beaker
Ugly Betty.
Having seen the photos now, sure we could call the XC "Beaker" but the ordinary 800 hasn't got one of those so it's sort of "Beakerless", so maybe open the debate again.
It's only the XC that has the Beak, so why not Beaker and Cub
Laddie
Named so for it's trellis frame that looks like a ladder, plus it plays off the Girly name... bout time we had a Ladd instead of a Lass, eh?

That's wet weight ladies and gents, which over here means ready to roll with a full tank. That is competitive with the 800GS.
95 ps will be more than enough on a slippery muddy track and the lower weight means it will run harder than a Girly on the road. Let's hope that the aerodynamics area bit better
How 'bout 'Steelie' in honour of the new frame, which to me is one of the bikes most attractive and practical features
At 210kg dry I'm beginning to think the new name should be, "disappointment".
Why Not "Tiger Cub"
Beaker and the rest seem so insulting Sorry None of the above would be my choice
..if the bike is panned for trying to be like the BMW and not making it...
Wannabe
Sorry my bad reading, 210 wet is not too bad, have to see what the feel is like, see where the weight is.
Not a fan of naming anything after something old, it's bad enough over here when someone says what bike have you got to reply Triumph Tiger and get the usual spiel about them having one in the 60s, hwich you have to break into and say no the 900 fuel injection model.
So Tiger Cub is a non starter for me
The F800GS has a wet weight of 207 kg and that's with a small 16l fuel tank.
I hope the Tiger 800XC has a larger tank.
Well, my cousin bought a new -10 F800GS a month ago and with 10 more horses the 800XC should be faster, at least on paper.
It will not be faster with me on it regardless. He's such a good driver that he beat me with his XT660, on twisties and gravel, with me on my Girly 955i.

Just my humble opinion. :D

Beaker is still the best. Addie??? naaa
I dislike all of them... none of them connect with the other to me except
Laddie
but I'm a yank..
Is this finished? Beaker is something a kid has a drink in. Terrible name for a bike.
I've decided the name should be GOAT because the acronyms are endless to describe this bike.
Goes On All Terrain.
Goes Over Any Track.
Great Offroad Adventure Tiger.
Goes Offroad And Tarmac.
etc. etc.
Anyone else agree?
I'm with you BT, GOAT should be considered.
The existing tigers are the steamer, Girly and the (highly imaginative) roadie. Which are, let's face it, not sensible or even particularly tough, exciting sounding names. Other bikers ride fazers, bandits, hogs, blades, gixers, ninjas and so on. I don't think we should try and make macho names to compete - I think we have a point of difference and it is our ridiculousness. Girly, I ask you!!!???! And for the record a 'steamer' round our way means a big pile of hot smelly crap - which, sometimes, I have to admit, when it breaks down, may just be a valid comparison. :Topes
We need to think of a name even more ridiculous than Beaker or I suggest Beaker is the winner and we close the poll and the legacy of stupidity continues!
Quote from: "nickcalne"And for the record a 'steamer' round our way means a big pile of hot smelly crap - which, sometimes, I have to admit, when it breaks down, may just be a valid comparison. :Topes
and that is exactly how the term steamer came to be when Johann called Jeremy's tiger a steamer on the Yahoo Tiger Forum years ago .....and from that day on it just kinda stuck .
Quote from: "nickcalne"legacy of stupidity continues!
I wouldn't have it any other way, Nick!
For me, the name sticks. It just has latched into my brain and it will be hard to unlatch it.
Now that I see them side by side, the resemblance is uncanny! :ImaPoser
I think Beeker fits it ............after all Triumph chose to put that silly beak on it like a GS
Another plausible suggestion over at TRAT was presented:
GOAT for the the Tiger 800 and MOUNTAIN GOAT for the Tiger 800 XC.
Not bad, but beaker is still pretty accurate and endearing IMO.
to me, a GOAT is (and always will be) a pontiac. I used to want one. Still kind of do....
BEAKER!
Looking at the side by side above, Beaker works but only for the orange colour. So does that make a green one (you know they'll make one next year) a Kermit?
I leave for little while and look what happens, you can't decide what to call the new bike.
Beaks in both flavors

I think Beaky would be a good name.
Slimfast? (due to it's light weight compared to previous incarnations).
Had a look at the Beaker for the first time yesterday at the BIG bike fair in Stockholm.
The beak was much wider than I had imagined before.
I really liked it.
