Title: Tune ECU error codes advice please
Post by: Bigyam on August 23, 2018, 08:45:48 PM
Hi all me again, Sorry to keep asking questions !  I have managed to get the Tune ECU working now & it gave me these error codes -PO123 throttle position sensor- (high voltage or short circuit to battery)
PO230 - (fuel pump relay fault)
P1231- (fuel pump relay open circuit or short circuit to ground )
Obviously it looks like a new relay for the fuel pump but what should i do about the TPS fault ?
Thank you

Remind me, what year bike have you got?

First things first though, clear the faults with Tune ECU, then see if they come back

Hi its a 2001 955i cheers. & running rough , ie it starts & ticks over but after about 3 miles it dies but will start & tick over but try to rev it & it dies , then all of a sudden it will go again for about half a mile then die again, as though it's fuel starvation ! the pump energises as normal i have just fitted  a new fuel filter as i thought it was that ! cleaned plugs & injectors cleaned !

OK, see,  where it gets complicated is that there is no fuel pump relay as such. OBD11 reports it as a fuel pump relay issue, but its not present. Could be the main EFI relay, Chris had problems with his, or maybe even ECU wiring, or yes, could be fuel pump itself, I had to replace mine on the last one. Going on some of your earlier posts it does look like an Electrical Butcher has had a go at some point, and the bikes 17 years old anyway so anything is possible. Just check all the wiring you can and maybe even remove the ECU and check the plug connections and the state of the underside of the ECU, its been known before. Oh, and dont forget the main fuse on side of battery, even an apparently ok looking fuse here can cause allsorts of weirdness.

Hi Timbox ,Thanks, i will work through what you have advised ! i have checked the pump as i had it out when i changed the fuel filter the other day i also checked the main fuse looked ok but i will have a closer look , where is the efi relay situated please  ?
Thanks

Its one of the relays under the seat to the side of the fusebox, can be either, easiest way to tell is put your fingers on the relays and turn on then off the ignition. The EFI relay turns off after a few seconds of the ignition being switched off, you should hear and feel it.  Think the other one is the headlight cut-out relay

Ok Tim , cleared all the codes , then checked main fuse -ok. checked the wiring to the ecu -ok. underneath ecu had a tad of corrosion on the case where the ecu tucks into the rear mudguard !  Checked the relay which i believe is the efi relay , it had quite a lot of crud around it !! cleaned it up seems ok it clicks & everything ! noticed the fuel lines were connected wrong way around so swapped them  ! from what i have read it makes no difference ? ! Took it for a ride & HEY PRESTO it seemed good no cutting out at all right up until the last corner from home & the blooming engine light came on(((( DAMN ))))   hooked it up to Tune ecu & it came up with code (PO123) throttle position sensor high voltage or short circuit to battery !
Where abouts is the throttle position sensor ??
Thanks

See arrow below, underneath that wiring on end of Throttle Bodies

No worries, although I have heard of faulty TPS in the past, wiring is more likely, I would disconnect plug on TPS and the ECU (Black plug) and just maybe use a contact cleaner and re-attach before going down the ohmmeter route

UPDATE
Hi guys, thought i'd update you all with my problem, After checking all the wiring etc numerous times i couldn't really find anything a miss ,so i bit the bullet & ordered a brand new TPS  it came yesterday £48 but it has solved the problem ! i have bee on two decent length rides now & the EML hasn't come on ! so fingers crossed  :wings The bike does seem to be slightly different especially from cold start it seems to rev for a lot longer before it settles down to a good tick over just like
i would expect it to !
Thanks Guys for all your help  :__ Especially Timbox

And mine was exactly the same when I changed the stepper motor.
